I Took a Cold Shower

Tonight, I’m not sure why… but I decided that I wanted to take a COLD shower. Maybe its partially due to the fact that I’ve been reading some of Dave Asprey’s posts about cryotherapy or that I just had the sudden urge to test my resilience. I once did a week long resilience challenge and on one of the days I had to take a freezing cold shower for 5 minutes. Nothing says you can make it through any fucking thing that comes your way that day like a surviving a 5 minute long cold shower.

If you don’t know who Dave Asprey is, or his brand bulletproof coffee and you are into health, you must be living under a rock. Just to get you hooked here are his posts about cryotherapy…

Anyways back to my cold shower.. it was PHENOMENAL. I’m not sure that there are too many people who would refer to cold showers as phenomenal but thats just the REAL truth. My hair feels softer than after a hot shower, my body feels relaxed, and because the shower was cold my pores stayed closed… so hopefully I absorbed less chlorine and other creepy substances that are floating around in our water today.

I took this shower after one of my favorite hard core booty workouts and a good dry brushing sess. And finished it off by slavering myself in coconut oil mixed with honey. For my face I used my vitamin C serum from one of the brands I love… Eminence. I strongly recommend this brand their citrus lip balm saved my lips one year when I was dealing with really chapped lips from low vitamin b12. I was actually in so much pain it hurt to talk some days, this stuff is legit and had my lips moist and smiling within a week!

After enjoying my cold shower, I was wondering what the benefits of it might be, besides the immediate ones I am currently feeling. Turns out there are PLENTY… Have a gander at the list below.

  1. Resilience: Look at that my resilience week was on to something, turns out cold showers can help with will power. Like I said if you can make it through a cold shower you can make it through anything.
  2. Stress Reduction: Maybe thats why I feel so relaxed, cold showers  boost the levels of noradrenaline in the body, which in turn releases releases more happy hormones into the body.
  3. Promotes Weight Loss: Cold showers can increase your metabolic rate, as it takes your body more energy to stay warm.
  4. Lymphatic System gets a Boost: Your lymphatic system helps to remove cellular waste and protect your body from infections. It can get slowed down by toxins, infections and excess waste products. When lymph vessels are directly exposed to cold they contract and then release when warmed, this movement allows them to flush out waste and perform optimally!
  5. Muscle Recovery: We’ve all heard of ice baths, theres a reason they have been around forever… they work. Like ice baths, cold showers increase circulation, enabling the body to bring essential nutrients to the muscles to help them recover. Hello reduced soreness.

Health Benefits of Sunflower Seeds

I’m sure at some point everyone has enjoyed a nice bag of sunflower seeds, wether you were at a baseball game or just chopping down a few on a nice summer afternoon. If you haven’t well, to put it nicely, YOUR MISSING OUT.

Now, when I was younger, sureee a bag of traditional salted sunflower seeds would do the trick, but  today I much prefer to chop on the SPROUTED organic variety. Sprouted sunflower seeds are actually relatively easy to find. Check out my favorite brand, GO Raw or give Living Intentions a try, they offer trail mix type bags of seedy goodness all with varying flavors.

To make you want to eat sunflower seeds even more this spring, here’s a short little list of their top nutrients and benefits associated with them!

Benefits of Sunflower Seeds

Magnesium: plays an important role in calming the body. Plus if OSTEOPOROSIS is in your family your gonna want as much of this mineral as you can get ( ok not quiet, don’t wanna go over board, but you get the picture). Magnesium helps the absorption of calcium into the intestines, therefore helping the overall absorption quantity.  Researchers have been able to induce osteoporosis in animals by feeding them a low- magnesium diet! CRAZY!!! A quarter cup of sunflower seeds give you more than 25% of the daily recommended value of magnesium!

Selenium: A not exactly well know nutrient but essential nutrient. It functions as an antioxidant that can help reduce swelling in the body. It has a special pace in glutathione production, a enzyme that plays a key role in the bodies DETOXIFICATION process.  ATTENTION thyroid suffers, selenium is also plays a critical role in thyroid hormone metabolism. If you know anything about the thyroid it converts the less active T4 hormone into the more active T3.  A 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds offers 34% of your daily needs.

Vitamin E: As a powerful antioxidant, helps fight free radical damage, something we should all want to avoid.  Also those who have a predisposition to HIGH CHOLESTEROL, benefit from the protective properties of Vitamin, which stops free radical damage occurring on LDL ( the bad cholesterol). When free radical damage that occurs on this “bad cholesterol”, it may initiated the early stages of atherosclerosis ( hardening of arteries). A 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds has 82% of the recommended value .

Vitamin B1: Easily lost through cooking, raw sprouted sunflower seeds are a great way to get your daily recommended value, as a 1/4 cup offers 42%. B1 helps to promote energy production from carbohydrates and fats. If you know anything about the Krebs cycle, lets just say vitamin B1 plays a very important role in getting the early stages of this energy generating cycle flowing. We all need energy to keep moving, breathing, and grinding. B1 is also important to the “structure and integrity” of the brain cells, according to Worlds Healthiest Foods.  Keep those BRAIN cells healthy and add some B1 to your daily smoothie with a sprinkle of sunflower seeds!

Do you eat sunflower seeds often? Do you even like sunflower seeds?!

If you have a great recipe with them and you’d like to share PLEASE DO!

Cupping Treatment

If your like me, you’ve tried many alternative methods to get your health back on track, there was one point where I was drinking cattail mixtures from South America to try and remedy my aliments. Lately, I’ve resorted to having needles stuck in my body (acupuncture), and getting at least 8 hours of sleep.. I know CRAZY. But honestly today for most people those 8 hours are a luxury.  But most recently I’ve tried CUPPING!

What is cupping?! Glad you asked, Cupping is a  Traditional Chinese Medicine, healing technique. Your practitioner heats up a glass jar, ( No it doesn’t BURN you), which creates a vacume that basically sucks your skin right up in there! Surprisingly it doesn’t hurt one bit, it just feels tight, kinda like if you tie your pony tail too tight or try and lift up your wrinkles in the mirror. Honestly, if anything, it is VERY RELAXING.

So your probably like… ” ok cool, they stick some hot cups on my back.. but whats the point? Wellll there are many benefits of cupping, I get cupping done to enhance my circulation and pull out excess toxins that my body stores, thanks to my MTHFR gene mutation. If you want to learn more about cupping Natural Living Ideas has a amazingly informative page to checkout.

3-reasons-to-try-cuppingNow I’m sure you’ve seen the beautiful serene photos of people getting cupping done, like this one from Mind Body Green, don’t get me wrong I love this site, but this is not exactly an accurate depiction of cupping. They got the fire right, butttt your skin does not exactly look so … I guess you could say … relaxed.

Pictured below is what cupping really looks like. Yes, bright pink and slightly aggravated, your skin is pulled up into those little jars. Might seem harsh, but like I mentioned it DOESN’T HURT one bit, just feels like a little pull. That pulling is what literally rings out the TOXINS from your body.

Cupping Therapy

Here’s what my back looked like right after she took off the cups…cupping therapy

My back continues to feel relaxed even 3 days after the treatment! So far I haven’t felt any adverse side effects hah… Even the massive red circles, aren’t painful, people just might think I’ve been abducted by aliens, andddd was taken back to their planet, buttttt the benefits are  well worth the weird stares.

Have you heard of cupping before? Do you think you would consider getting it done?! Let me know in the comments!

Health Benefits of Watermelon Seeds

I don’t know if someone ever told you when you were little, that if you ate watermelon seed or apple seeds or anything of the like a small plant would grow in your stomach.. no? only me? Where was your childhood?! Or maybe your friends and family members were a little nicer than mine, because in all honestly when I was younger, the thought of a planet growing in my stomach was absolutely terrifying.

But as it turns out I, like many other frightened children, had nothing to fear. Watermelon seeds are actually really good for us! Here are 5 health benefits of watermelon seeds that will have you ordering Go Raw’s Watermelon seeds right away! The reason I order Go Raw is because they are the only company to offer sprouted, organic, watermelon seeds. It’s very important to have sprouted nuts and seeds as when they are in this state they contain their highest potential  amount of vitamins and minerals.

Health Benefits of Watermelon Seeds

1. Contain a Decent Amount of Protein

We all know protein is great for building, and keeping muscle. The amino acids, found in proteins, are the building blocks of the body and perform a whole host of other important

My very empty bag of watermelon seeds.

functions too. ( like blood pressure regulation, #4)  1 cup of watermelon seeds contains a little over 30g of protein, now you probably wouldn’t want to eat a whole cup, but adding a tbsp or 2 to your smoothies each day will definitely help you up your protein intake.

2. Great Source of B Vitamins

Watermelon seeds are a rich source of B vitamins! We all we need B vitamins to survive. Watermelon seeds contain plentiful sources of riboflavin, Folate, B5, Niacin, and Thiamine. Riboflavin is important for energy it aids in the conversion of fats, proteins and carbs into energy for your body to use, you’d feel sluggish without it! Additionally Niacin is used for treating levels of high cholesterol, so eat some watermelon seeds to help keep your cholesterol in check!

3. Plenty of Magnesium

Magnesium, I like to call it the relaxing mineral, magnesium can help your body relax, especially if you feel like you are in constant monkey brain. I take a generous amount every night before I go to bed to help me sleep and wind down. Not only is magnesium helpful for relaxation it is also important to a healthy immune system. Be sure your getting enough magnesium this flu season by adding some yummy watermelon seeds to your diet.

4. Blood Pressure Regulation ( The Mighty Arginine)

One of the compounds found in watermelon seeds is Arginine. This amino acid protects the arterial walls from hardening, which can impede blood flow and cause high blood pressure. Additionally Arginine is useful due to its anti-inflamatory effects on the body.

5. Rich in Micronutrients

Micronutrients like zinc, phosphorous, magnesium, and manganese are plentiful in watermelon seeds. Although the body does not need a lot of these nutrients ( hence micro-nutrients) they are still important enough to be used by the body everyday. A deficiency in any of these can throw multiple chemical pathways out of whack.

So, start living up to your bodies potential and get some watermelon seeds! But remember only the sprouted kind! You want to get the most out of these nutrient powerhouses.

Todays Blondie Bite is just a cup of watermelon, that is is. I didn’t have time to write up a recipe. So instead I have a health tid bit. Watermelon contains more lycopene than tomatoes. Lycopene is a valuable antioxidant that is used to slow down the effects of aging and ward off a number of cancers. Lycopene is often used in beauty products, so maybe throw some watermelon on your face tonight and call it a face mask.

Rumble Rolling and Foam Rolling

I’m sure those of you who frequent the gym on a regular basis have noticed those large foam cylinders, i.e. Foam Rollers, whether or not you actually use them, I don’t know. But img_0414what I do know is that they are SO beneficial for SOOTHING sore muscles. Every now and again we have those days where we push our sore butts to get to the gym because you know, you feel a little guilty not going. But, then you get there and your like, “nah, just really not feeling it”. That’s when my little friend the foam roller comes in, well I have a Rumble Roller, but more on that beauty later. The Foam Roller can make those seemingly unproductive days, VERY productive.

So at this point your either really confused because you have never noticed the odd shaped foam object hiding in the corner of the weight room, you’ve seen it and just wondered “ who actually uses that thing?”, or you are that person who uses “that thing”. Either way if you’re a total newbie or and avid roller this post is for you. So newbies, basically the Foam Roller is a great recovery tool, it enables you to do a self-myofascial release, essentially giving yourself a massage.

But What are the Benefits?

The Foam Roller offers numerous benefits similar to a massage just maybe not quiet as relaxing, depending on your level of muscle tightness, it may take you a few foam rolling sessions to love it. Trust me, it’s a love hate relationship once you really get rolling hah. BUT the benefits are totally worth it

  1. Increased Blood Flow: We all know increased blood flow to the muscles means the better chance they have of getting all the nutrients they need to grow.
  2. Increased Range of Motion: Tightness can impact how well we are able to move certain body parts. By releasing the myofascia, joints may be able to reach optimal range of motion.
  3. Decrease Risk of Injury: More flexibility, more range of motion, both things will help you from pulling a hammy or injuring a knee. Our joints have less strain when tight muscles aren’t pulling on them.
  4. Decreases Recovery Time: Back to the point about blood flow, foam rolling will make you less sore since your muscles fuel will be replenished quicker, allowing for a shorter recovery time. Less recovery time means more time to GET THE GAINS.
  5. Relaxing, Sort Of: After a number of Foam Rolling sessions it will begin to feel like a nice ritual and hopefully be a little less painful. Slowing down and allowing yourself to relax is good for your body and also your mind. Plus we all know stress is not a friend whether on a weight loss or muscle building journey. Too much cortisol = excess fat storage.

Here is the foam roller I use! This is another great option, it is a travel sized foam roller, so you can take it to the gym or even on vacation.

Now onto the Rumble Roller, that thing I mentioned earlier, and yes, this is for you Foam Rolling PROS.

So, you feel like you’ve conquered the Foam Roller, meaning your no-longer squirming with pain while rolling out your lats, calves, or any of the other known painful places. Well, good and bad news, now its time to step it up, with the RUMBLE ROLLER. This really is the workout tool that embodies NO PAIN NO GAIN. This bad boy is like the Foam Roller’s mean older brother. Just did a butt workout yesterday, sit your glutes on the Rumble Roller and feel the pain, I mean muscle recovery. One look at the Rumble Roller and you’ll see why I describe it in such a way. Yes it is still made out of foam but those nobs get right into those hard to reach muscles, just like the knuckles of a masseuse, they get all the knots, even the ones you didn’t know you had. When rolling out your quads you can actually feel the muscle being released, sound effects sometimes included.

Once again heres the rumble roller I have, actually featured in this post too. And heres a travel sized one, and its a little cheaper! If you can’t make up your mind about which one you want to choose, there is this option, which is a package of a travel sized rumble roller and a foam roller!

How to do it? How much pain do I need to get the gains?

Here’s a video you could purchase “Full Body Foam Rolling DVD“, suposidly it is really good for learning how to foam roll and really use your foam roller for maximum benefits or…

There are great videos on YouTube of how to use the Rumble or Foam Roller. But for a easy HOW TOO, I’ll give you an example of using it on your hamstrings.

  1. Sit down with the area right below your left butt check on the roller, with the right check hanging off. Your right leg should be bent for support as well as your hands.
  2. Hands start off placed behind you and as you slowing move down your leg adjust accordingly.
  3. Slowly roll down your leg pausing when ever you feel a sensation of pain and rest there until the pain goes away or at least decreases, usually about 30 seconds and then continue on down until you reach your knee.
  4. Don’t forget to BREATH, sometime breath can help release your muscles easier, if you tense up because of the pain, the muscle won’t be released as easily.
  5. Repeat on other side!

Let me know how you do! Or share some great videos you’ve found below!

Coffee Enema Tips

Yes I do coffee enemas, if you haven’t been keeping up I quiet enjoy them. Here are just a few tips that I’ve learned to make your enema as relaxing as possible.

  1. Breath! Seems dumb but the slower and deeper you breath the more relaxed you are. Plus I’ve found the deeper I breath the more gurgling I hear! You want that coffee to get into all those crevices!
  2. Still on the topic of breathing, practice some breathing exercises, like alternate nostril breathing, inhale with the nose and out through the mouth, or even just count your inhales and exhales
  3. Light some candles, or get out your essential oil diffuser! Lavender is especially calming
  4. Listen to holosync music, seriously so relaxing, I just started doing this. Holoysync is designed specifically to help to relax. If you really love it check out this package.
  5. Dry Brush before! I love dry brushing, it helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, check out this post to find out a little more!
  6. Ensure you will be warm enough, either place a blanket over yourself or keep the bathroom at a nice temperature
  7. When removing the tub clip it closed first and pinch the part right where it connects to the nozzle to avoid spillage, less mess for later
  8. Take a shower after, you’ll feel super clean and very relaxed and refreshed
  9. Lastly carve out time for it, the last thing you want to do is feel rushed while trying to do a enema, you want to be relaxed. This is you time, you are helping your body detox and inviting all the good things that relaxing and self love can bring

I’ve got two great choices for enema kits for you, heres one, very expensive but the bucket is stainless steel, therefore very safe and toxin free. The other enema kit is less expensive plastic type material but as long as your liquid isn’t hot, you shouldn’t be too concerned with toxins.

Self Love Day 3

So the reason I stopped with the whole practicing spanish thing is honestly because I don’t know how to spell three in spanish, I know how to say it but not how to spell it… so #fuckit.. we are back to english now. But today I’m gonna clue you in on my favorite myofascial release, and no unfortunately it’s not a massage. Remember I’m a broke college student, I don’t got money for that!  Also for those of you who don’t know myofascial release basically just means applying pressure to connective tissue, which will help improve it’s function, it can be painful but you feel so much looser afterwards!

I used to go to a special trainer 2 times a week to work out all the lumps and bumps in my connective tissue! What I’m going to talk about today you may need to work your way up to. I use whats called a rumble roller so I can get really deep into my connective tissues, but if your just starting you may want just the typical foam roller. A foam roller will only cost you like 15 dollars.. way cheaper than a massage plus the benefits you’ll have for basically a life time, are so worth your 15$. If you wanna try them both but don’t feel like dishing out major dough on something that could potentially hurt ( eh hmm rumble roller) try this two pack! The rollers are mini and you get both types for around 30 bucks!

Im not like trying to sell you these things or anything, I don’t own a rumble rolling company.. lol if only.. then I’d be rolling in the dough.. get it haha.. #badjoke.. They really are just so great for the body they have completely changed my range of motion. Don’t quote me but I swear my rumble roller has helped me get ride of cellulite, it could also be my new found love for lifting heavy but I swear that thing helps too!

I did a full series today, meaning I rolled out my entire body. My favorite is to position is like WHOAH…  I place the rumble roller horizontally in reference to my spine, starting at my shoulders and then roll all the way down to my tail bone. I do one kinda fast roll down then work my way to my neck and slowly roll down stopping on any sore spots.

In all honesty the first couple of times you try this you might not like it.. it is a little painful, but think about a good massage, usually those involve a little bit of pain! After your used to these rollers, they become a relaxation/de-stress tool. And for all you FITNESS FREAKS this is great on recovery days! Seriously it will help your muscles recover faster! You can even do a short SESS before and/or after your workouts. I would suggest searching on YouTube for some routines you can do.

But yeah thats what I did on Self Love Day number 3 just rollin’ rollin’ rollin’… a good session can last around an hour. I used to spend an hour somedays with my special trainer just rolling out everything. So I hope I’ve convinced you to give it a try! If you want to know more just click here. It’s a whole article all about foam vs. rumble rolling and their benefits!

The Blondie Bite of the day is some delicious vegan Kale nachos! This isn’t my recipe but I love it click on the link to find some “cheesy” vegan goodness! Don’t be afraid to add your own guacamole to this dish!

Do you rumble or roam roll? Have you even heard of either of these before?!
